My Story

Daisy’s location of birth is unknown, but she spent her first years as an infant and juvenile working in a circus act in Florida. When she was about 10, she was sold by her owner in the Tampa area and shipped to a California breeder where she would be bred to produce more infants for the entertainment industry. Her first baby (a female named Angel) was pulled and sold to another Hollywood trainer. Daisy had a few more infants, but they died in her care.

Daisy arrived in Wauchula in August 2004 a few days before Hurricane Charley hit the sanctuary. She came with eight-year-old twins Jonah and Jacob and the adolescent male Kenuzy. In March 2005, three young females (Maggie, Ellie, & Bella) joined their group, and Daisy spent three years as the senior member of this troop of adolescent chimpanzees.

Though respected by her younger group mates, Daisy was often aloof from the adolescents. In fact, as the youngsters in her group became more exuberant and demanding, Daisy seemed annoyed at their constant teasing and rough-housing. So, in January 2008, Daisy was introduced to another former circus performer, Roger.

Roger and Daisy formed an instant bond and seem well-suited to each other as they enjoy spending a little time playing…more time grooming each other… and most of their time resting together. Daisy is much happier with this older companion and much more relaxed.

Daisy’s only surviving offspring, Angel, has recently arrived at the Center for Great Apes as a retired television performer. Daisy will soon have the first opportunity to meet her own daughter as Angel will be soon introduced to Daisy and Roger.

Daisy has a few quirky food preferences as she passes up most vegetables except cooked onions and green peppers.
